Liz Jackson (Partner/Optometrist)
Liz went to Aston University and qualified as an Optometrist in 1991. Having worked in hospitals, independent and multiple environments for a few years before opening Oakwood Eyecare Centre with her husband (Tom) in 1994, Alvaston Opticians in 2007 and then Kimberley Opticians in 2011. She is known for her caring nature, she excels with young and old alike, but this is why having the “time” to spend with her patients is vital. Liz is responsible for all the practice admin, accounts and processes. She has also led many charity trips abroad to Africa and India testing eyes with Vision Aid Overseas (VAO). In her spare time, Liz is an avid reader and loves cooking.
Tom Jackson (Partner/Optometrist)
Tom went to Aston University and qualified as an Optometrist in 1990. He worked as a locum in an independent and multiple environment before opening Oakwood Eyecare with Liz in 1994, Alvaston Opticians in 2007 and Kimberley Opticians in 2011. He is known his thorough and patient nature and does the majority of the home visits for all practices. He is also responsible for marketing. As health and safety lead and a varifocal wearer he has a good understanding of the needs of computer and other device users, whether at home or at work. Tom has also done a VAO trip to Africa testing eyes. He particularly appreciates working in his own independent practice so he can give the care he feels his patients deserve. In his spare time he will be found in the garden or singing; or often both!
Laura Durand (nee Young) Optometrist
Laura worked at Oakwood Eyecare during holidays while studying Optometry at Bradford University and also did her graduate year there. After successfully qualifying as an optometrist in 2007 she continued working there and now also covers Alvaston and Kimberley Opticians. Being involved in all aspects of eye testing – she does home visits and childrens eye screening. As our clinical governance lead, she helps ensure that we always monitor and exceed the regulatory requirements. Laughter is a common sound emanating from her test room. She loves working with people every day and as no two days or challenges are ever the same. Laura has been on a VAO trip to Africa testing eyes and in her spare time is involved with amateur dramatics and singing.
Laura will be on maternity leave from November 2016.
Dawn (Manager/Optical Assistant)
Dawn starting working in opticians in 1992 and at Oakwood Eyecare from 1997. In 2005 she won a national award of "Optical Assistant of the Year". When Alvaston Opticians was created in 2007 she became the manager and has helped develop this increasingly popular practice. She is proud of her "amazing" staff and enjoys every aspect of the job especially helping such a variety of patients each with their individual needs.
Sarah (Optical Assistant)
Sarah started working in opticians in 2008 as a receptionist and joined Alvaston Opticians in 2012. During this time she says that she has learned so much about optics thanks to a great team, never feels like she's working and has fun chatting to all patients.
Angie (Optical Assistant)
Angie's first job in an opticians was here at Alvaston having previously run an office in the steel/powder coating industry. She loves coming to work with the team, the variety it gives and learning more every day. Outside of work, she spends time with her 4 boys and partner, socialises with friends and goes to the gym.
