Eye Exams

Alvaston Opticians offer you continuity of care by the same optician, year after year.

Adult’s Eye Exams

You should allow about 45 minutes to get a thorough eye exam.

Tests are done to calculate how well the eyes work with each other in terms of their alignment and how they focus. Vision is measured with any existing glasses and compared to the best vision that you can achieve with any glasses.

We routinely measure the pressure of your eyes and this can now be done without the need for the "puff of air" test. You will also have your visual fields assessed, both tests help us make sure that you don't have Glaucoma.

All tests allow our Optometrists to inform you how best to care for the health of your eyes and advise you of all your options regarding glasses or contact lenses.

You can either pay for Eye Exams (currently £25) as you attend or join one of our monthly direct debit schemes to spread the cost and allow you as many appointments as you need (with no NHS restrictions or additional fees).

Children’s Eye Exams

Children’s vision is precious and our opticians are happy to examine children of ANY age. The tests are often done in a different way to an adult test so don’t worry if, e.g. they don’t know the names of any letters, it is still well worth bringing them. There’s even an assessment that can be made on a baby’s vision using a preferential looking test where we simply observe their direction of gaze when presenting them with images of different intensity.

You can book your child in for a test at any time if either they are due (been reminded following a previous test), if it’s their first test or if you have any concerns about their vision. It is a good idea for children to start having tests before they start school at the latest.

Our optometrist will routinely assess the alignment of their eyes, measure the prescription to see whether glasses are needed and check the health of the eyes. The whole test is designed around the individual child and every effort is made to get the best result in a relaxed/ fun environment. All results are explained as the test progresses.

Please contact us if you have any questions or to book an appointment.

Professional Care Prices and Schemes

You can either pay for Eye Exams (currently £25) or Contact Lens Aftercares (currently £30) as you attend or join one of our monthly direct debit schemes to spread the cost and allow you as many appointments as you need (with no NHS restrictions or additional fees).

Eye Exams:
Eye Exams are available whenever needed, whether recommended by your Optometrist or even if you just have concerns or questions. You may also choose to have another test just before ordering some new glasses.

Do you wear glasses?

What about a LOYALTY discount for each and every pair you buy – not just when there’s a sale on, or from a restricted range or old stock, or on just one pair a year!

Glasses Discounts:
You can also choose to include a 25% discount off as many pairs of glasses as you'd like to purchase (providing they're made to your prescription); this included prescription sunglasses, second pairs and sports glasses.

Contact Lens Aftercare:
This covers all the ongoing appointments you need to assess the fit and condition of your contact lenses, the implications of contact lens wear on the health of your eye, and your contact lens prescription. If you ever need an alternative type of lens, your trials would be covered.

Total Eyecare all the time:
Let us look after your eyes, glasses and contact lenses with our schemes, covering all your Eye Examinations, contact lens aftercares, as well as giving you a discount on the purchase of any prescription glasses, at any time. We can tailor any scheme to meet your needs, whether you just want Eye Examinations, or you need it all!

All prices payable by monthly direct debit

NHS Eligibility

Some patients are entitled to a free NHS eye exam and an optical voucher to help with the cost of glasses or contact lenses. Patients who are not eligible for NHS eye exams pay privately. The section below will explain if you are entitled to a free NHS eye exam or NHS optical voucher and how to claim them.

Am I entitled to free NHS eye exam?

You qualify for a free NHS funded eye exam if you are:

  • aged under 16, or aged under 19 and in full-time education
  • aged 60 or over
  • registered blind or partially sighted
  • diagnosed with diabetes or glaucoma
  • aged 40 or over and you are the parent, brother, sister, son or daughter of a person diagnosed with glaucoma, or you have been advised by an ophthalmologist that you are at risk of glaucoma
  • eligible for an NHS complex lens voucher

You are also entitled to a free NHS eye exam if:

  • you receive Income Support or Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (not contribution based)
  • you receive Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
  • you receive Income-based Employment and Support Allowance
  • you are entitled to, or named on, a valid NHS tax credit exemption certificate
  • you are named on a valid NHS certificate for full help with health costs (HC2)
  • you are a prisoner on leave from prison

People named on an NHS certificate for partial help with health costs (HC3) may also get help.

Can I get a free eye exam at home?

A home visit involves one of our optometrists coming to visit you in your own home or at a day centre. The cost of this is usually covered by the NHS, please ask us for details.

Am I entitled to an NHS funded glasses voucher?

You may get help with the cost of glasses or contact lenses for all reasons allowing an NHS eye exam except:

  • aged 60 or over
  • registered blind or partially sighted
  • diagnosed with diabetes or glaucoma

You will be asked to show us proof of your entitlement but it is not compulsary to have this with you at the time of the claim.
